Background

I was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts and moved to Cape Town, South Africa when I was 9 years old. I was introduced to field hockey (hockey as it is called here) upon our move to South Africa as it is one of the most played and admired sports in the country. The national passion for hockey comes from the Dutch and English colonizers of South Africa and it is played competitively by both men and women.

I have struggled to continue playing field hockey as my school does not offer it as a sport.  As a result I have played for two other high schools over the course of my high school career as well as two club teams.

I now play for Central Hockey Club, which is one of the top clubs in Cape Town. This past year our Ladies Grand Challenge (LGC) Team had four players attend the Olympic Games including the co-captain, and the Men’s Grand Challenge (MGC) team sent six players, including the co-captain, to the Olympics. Central sent more players to the Olympics than any other club in South Africa. I have been honored as a young player to have been brought up for many games to play on the LGC as well as being a fixture on the Ladies Grand Reserve team at the club.

Field Hockey Goals

I have just finished my junior year season (April 2024-September 2024).  I am looking to be recruited as a 2026 recruit.  I will begin my senior year season in April 2025 and plan to take a gap year after I graduate in May 2025.  I will continue to play field hockey in my gap year and thus have another two full seasons playing at Central Hockey Club as well as one more season of high school field hockey before playing at university. This is the highest level of competitive play in South Africa for club hockey.

Leadership Activities and Special Interests

I have lived in South Africa for nine years and as a result I am more aware of certain aspects of poverty, lack of education and basic human rights and gender based violence. Education is integral to ending the cycle of poverty, but there must be good systems in place in order to achieve this and understanding the issues facing people in abject poverty is essential.

I have chosen to take Global Issues for the past 3 years as it provides an ongoing in depth view and constant discussion around the issues I care about deeply. For my end of year project, I chose to focus on education, specifically the lack of education for young girls and women in Afghanistan.

For the past two years I have chosen volunteer programs for my end of year “Innovation Term” projects - going to Botswana and Thailand. These experiences have propelled my interest in taking a gap year to further my interests in environmental conservation and activism as I am looking to do internships in both Costa Rica and Tanzania in environmental research.

For my senior year impact project, I have been working with my brother to create a company called Matimba - which means “power” in Tsonga. Matimba provides cookstoves to poor families in rural communities in Zambia paid for in part through carbon financing. I will continue in my gap year to work in growing Matimba and will also be traveling to Zambia. [Matimba website]
